SEC Care Volunteers

SEC Care volunteers provide a valuable service and make a positive difference to the SEC Care community. Many of our organisation's services are dependent upon the support and availability of dedicated volunteers.

Day Centre Support Volunteers

SEC Care welcome volunteers who may wish to support the functioning of our Day Centres located in Brighton, Orford and Sorell. SEC Care Day Centre volunteers make a positive difference by assisting clients with activities, morning and afternoon teas, lunch, as well as engaging in conversations and providing company.

The time committed to volunteering is an individual choice, and can be weekly, fortnightly or even just once a month.

Community Transport Drivers

Our volunteer drivers provide a valuable service to clients when family or close friends are not able to assist with transport to non-urgent medical appointments, either in the local area or to specialist appointments in Hobart.

SEC Care Community Transport Vehicles are used in the transport of patients and are used at no expense to the volunteer. The availability of volunteer drivers is also an individual choice.

Celebrating 25 years of transport in Sorell

In 1993, two women dedicated to their community decided to make a difference to the lives of people who were unable to drive, but needed to regularly attend medical appointments. Using their own vehicles, Sorell-based women, Irene Iles and Judy Berry, started a program that provided transport to people living in rural parts of South Eastern Tasmania.

Founding member of the transport service, Judy Berry, said over the first five years of operation, the demand for transport to non-urgent medical appointments continued to grow, so measures were taken to purchase a vehicle.

“In 1998, a group of us tirelessly fundraised and sought support from local businesses and organisations until we were able to purchase our first vehicle,” Ms Berry said.

“Over the years, the service kept growing and eventually we sought help from South Eastern Community Care (SEC Care).”

In 2006, the transport service came under the auspice of SEC Care, allowing the service to expand, as well as secure the future of the volunteer-run program.

Today, the SEC Care Transport Service has over 12 volunteers who use SEC Care-owned vehicles to take people to and from medical appointments 5 days a week.

SEC Care CEO Helen Pollard said National Volunteer Week was a time to reflect on the dedication and compassion of our volunteers.

“Many people in our communities rely on our volunteer-run transport program to seek the medical treatment they need to remain fit, healthy and independent in their homes,” Ms Pollard said.

“Without our volunteers, our transport program would not exist and people living in isolated areas would be forced to pay hundreds of dollars for taxi fares they cannot afford.”

Ms Pollard said as our population continues to age, the demand for transportation continues to grow.

“We are always looking for people who want to give back to their community through volunteering,” Ms Pollard said.

On Tuesday, 8 November, the SEC Care volunteer team had a get together to celebrate the retirement of our much-loved volunteer driver, Terry Harriss.
Terry has given many hours of his time over the years, ensuring hundreds of our clients made it to their appointments. We are forever grateful to the valuable service he has provided over the years and we will all miss him greatly. We wish Terry and his wife all the best for the years ahead.

SEC Care Volunteers recognised at Hobart City Volunteer Recognition ceremony

On Wednesday, 18 May, two of our wonderful volunteers attended the City of Hobart's Volunteer Recognition ceremony and received an award on behalf of SEC Care. We would like to thank the Hobart City Council for hosting this event and paying homage to the amazing work Tasmanian volunteers do to help their local communities.

National Volunteers' Week 2016

National Volunteers' Week is a time to thank and reflect on all the amazing time and effort volunteers give our communities everyday.
